GEORGE BROOKSHAW (1751-1823)

The Horticultural Repository. London: Sherwood, Jones and Co., [1820-]1823. 2 volumes, 8° (247 x 152mm). 97 hand-coloured lithographic plates (of 98), some folding, plate 27 replaced by a contemporary watercolour copy of the plate. (Some plates trimmed close, affecting a few imprints, plates 14 and 37 with oxidation? to pigments and associated offsetting of type from adjacent text leaf, occasional light spotting and dust-soiling, mainly confined to margins.) Contemporary green half morocco over marbled-paper covered boards (extremities lightly rubbed).

FIRST EDITION. The title is slightly misleading since the work is entirely devoted to edible fruit and nuts. The work, issued periodically, was completed in July 1823: a notice of Brookshaw's death in Greenwich during the previous winter is given by the anonymous final editor in the preface. He goes on to say 'It is hoped... that the present work... will... form a suitable monument to [Brookshaw's] genius and talent.' The watercolour of plate 27 was evidently bound in at the time of binding, and is not a later insertion. Dunthorne 56; Nissen BBI 245.
