A silver copy of the gold Scott Medal awarded to Captain R.F. Scott, RN (now in the British Museum) for leadership of his expedition of 1901-1904 to the Antarctic. The medal was designed by Gilbert Bayes and shows a bust of Scott above two laurel branches on the obverse and an Antarctic scene (members of the sledging party, the ship and a sledge, above seals and penguins) on the reverse. Shackleton was honoured with a similar Special Award in gold by the Society on his return from the Nimrod expedition in 1909 (The Shackleton Medal, also designed by Bayes).
The Royal Geographical Society issued Special Medals to the Officers and Staff of the Discovery and crew who served throughout the expedition. 'On 16th September [1904] Shackleton took part in the festivities which greeted his old comrades in London, a lunch on the deck of the Discovery in the East India Dock, and a great dinner by the Royal Geographical Society. Later he shared the honours showered on the expedition which had inaugurated Antarctic land travel - the King's award of the Polar Medal, an octagon hung from a white ribbon, and a silver replica of the special gold medal presented by the Royal Geographical Society to Captain Scott.'
