Shackleton to his wife, Punta Arenas, 3 September 1916
Shackleton arrived in Punta Arenas on the Yelcho with his rescued men from Elephant Island on 3 September 1916 where they enjoyed the hospitality of the Chilean port and its British colony. The Yelcho took the party up to Valparaiso on 15 September. ‘At Valparaiso, on 27 September, a reception awaited them as heartening and suffocating as that at Punta Arenas. Macklin recalled that it took them over half an hour to cover the fifty yards from the ship to the Naval Club. The following day Shackleton lectured in Santiago, for the British Red Cross and a Chilean naval charity. His men were presented to the President and he was given a Chilean order.’ (M. and J. Fisher, Shackleton, London, 1957, pp.396-7)
