Madras was taken by the French in 1746, only to be returned to the British two years later in exchange for Louisbourg in Acadia (Canada). They besieged it again, unsuccessfully, in 1759, during the Seven Years' War. The plan shows Fort St George and the surrounding native quarter ('Ville noire') to the north and the Company gardens to the south.
