Lot Essay

The pair to this door was sold by the Metropolitan Museum of Art at Sotheby's, New York, 18 October 2006, lot 314. The design corresponds to the door frames in the rococo Hall at Saltram, Devon, which was part of the remodel for John Parker in 1745-1750 (see C. Hussey, English Country Houses: Mid Georgian 1760-1800, Suffolk, 1955, p. 126, pl. 241).
