A RARE IMPERIAL MOTHER-OF-PEARL-INLAID ZITAN CHEST AND STAND, GUANPIXIANG
KANGXI PERIOD (1662-1722)
Each of the two front doors are intricately decorated with nine mother-of-pearl kui dragons, forming a stylised shou character. The sides of the cover are similarly inlaid with mother-of-pearl, depicting one further shou character to the front and four monster masks to the corners. The drop-in tray to the top has three compartments, above four short drawers and one long drawer with gilt-bronze foliate handles. The gilt-bronze hinges to the sides of the doors and the back of the cover are exquisitely detailed with lotus blooms and dense leafy scrolls. The escutcheon and the ruyi-shaped lock plate to the front, which attaches the cover to the two doors, are also decorated with lotus designs. The zitan stand is carved with ferocious lions, flower heads, lappets and stylised archaistic scrolls, supported on four claw feet.
The chest 17 5/16 in. (44 cm.) high, 16 ¾ in. (42.5 cm.) wide, 12 in. (30.5 cm.) deep
