TWO JAPANESE LACQUER CHESTS COMMISSIONED FOR THE PORTUGUESE MARKET
MOMOYAMA PERIOD, LATE 16TH/EARLY 17TH CENTURY
Both decorated in gold and silver hiramaki-e [low relief lacquer] on a black ground and inlaid in mother-of-pearl with various designs including vine, tachibana [citrus], kikyo [Chinese bellflowers] and birds, all panels bordered with the inlaid bands of geometric patterns, gilt bronze engraved fittings, lacking fronts and drawers
The largest 25 in. (64 cm.) wide; 17¼ in. (44 cm.) high; 14 in. (36 cm.) deep
