Lot Essay
These tables were almost certainly supplied for the dining room at Compton Place, Wiltshire as part of the refurbishment and alterations carried out by its owner Charles Penruddock (d.1789); one of the tables is shown in situ in the seventeenth century dining room along with other late Georgian furniture in H.A.Tipping, English Homes, period IV, vol.I, 1920, p.306, fig.383. The neoclassical drawing room at Compton Place with its Adam-style plasterwork ceiling was probably also created at the same time. With their trompe l'oeil cube parquetry tops and six-leg design, the pair bears comparison to tables supplied by the Golden Square cabinet-makers Messrs Mayhew and Ince. The form is regarded as characteristic of the firm's output, and related tables attributed to Mayhew and Ince sold Christie's, London, 15 April 1982, lot 97; Christie's, London, 22 April 1989, lot 113; and Sotheby's London, 16 November 1984, lot 154.
Another side table supplied to the 2nd Earl Bathurst featuring the same cube parquetry pattern to the top and hence attributed to Mayhew and Ince is offered as lot 531 in the present sale.
