LIPSIUS, Justus (1547-1606). Opera omnia. Antwerp: Plantin, 1621[-1602].
7 volumes, 4° (233 x 166mm). 9 engraved plates, some folding, and numerous illustrations, some full page. (Occasional light browning and waterstaining, vol. 1 with short worm track in margin of some leaves, vol. 4 with a few short tears, small holes in title of vol. 5.) Early 19th-century mottled quarter calf, spines with raised bands, red morocco labels, compartments with gilt wavy rule, edges red (spine of vol. 1 chipped, corners rubbed, vol. 6 with small losses near lower joint). Provenance: H. Bondele (signature on some titles; light marginalia in vol. 4, perhaps in another early hand) – Essen Library, Belgium (stamps on titles and some margins; shelf labels).
THE RARE FIRST COMPLETE EDITION OF LIPSIUS’S COLLECTED WORKS: the so-called unofficial complete edition, preceding the official edition of 1637. Jan Moretus’s heirs prepared this edition of the great humanist’s works by combining remaining sheets of individual editions together with reprints of others. cf. Brunet III, 1093.
