Lot Essay

The naval Battle of Livorno was a victory of the Dutch fleet under Commodore Johan van Galen over an English squadron under Captain Henry Appleton. The ships involved in this battle are identified by a trompe-l’oeil sheet of paper in the lower right corner. The composition follows Lingelbach’s large painting in the collection Dr. C.J.K. van Aelst in Hoevelaken. Another copy, formerly attributed to Lingelbach, is in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
