Lot Essay

Please compare the present lot to another version with a comparible composition in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, titled: Effect of Dawn or Twilight and dated '1860' (oil on paper laid down on panel, 17 x 30 cm. inv.no. CAI. 90). This work was bequeathed to the museum by Constantine Alexander Ionides in 1900. Kunsthandel E.J. van Wisselingh sold the present small sketch (10.5 x 18 cm.) to Mrs. Groesbeek in Amsterdam in 1929. Another version entitled Le Voiturier (28.5 x 38.5 cm.) was sold at the sale of Boussod & Valadon in The Hague in November 1903. This indicates that Maris probably painted this subject several times.
