These dessert-tureens formed part of a service given as a wedding present by the Prince Regent to his brother Adolphus Duke of Cambridge (1774-1850) on the occasion of his wedding in 1818 to his cousin Princess Augusta of Hesse-Kassel. The Duke spent many years in Germany, first undertaking military training and then going into battle during the Flanders Campaign in 1783 where he was wounded and captured but swiftly rescued. He later served as Viceroy of Hannover on behalf of his older brothers George IV and William IV.

The decoration on this service is frequently attributed to Thomas Martin Randall, whose decorating workshop was located in Islington in London, see W D John and G.J. Coombes, Nantgarw Porcelain Album, Glamorgan, 1975, illust. 58 for a plate from this service.
