Bellenger after Leon Lhermitte, with an additional suite of all the engravings printed without text. ORIGINAL PEN AND WASH DRAWING by Lhermitte for the engraved tailpiece on page 115 (signed "L.Lh"). Contemporary brown morocco "Janséniste" by Marius Michel, spine in five compartments, gilt lettered in two, elaborate green morocco doublures stamp signed "Marius Michel," bold lozenge pattern in maroon morocco onlaid bands with an overall and alternating design of purple grape clusters and light green morocco onlaid stylized grape leaves, gold brocade linings and marbled endpapers, original wrappers bound in; original blue morocco backed chemise and slipcase.
LIMITED EDITION, number 38 of 50 copies on "très beau papier de Chine” of a total edition of 600. Theuriet identified Lhermitte as the "one man among our living painters who is best aquainted with the peasant and knows how to render his appearance with the greatest truth" (page VI). Like the copy in Ray's The Art of the French Illustrated Book, this copy is a "perfect example of the collector's book of the period. It is one of twenty-five printed on China paper out of the 600 which Launette published as his 'bibliophiles' edition.' It has a suite of the engravings printed without text and a pen-and wash drawing... It is bound by Marius Michel in morocco with mosaic doublures symmetrically decorated with flowers and leaves."
