Vol. 1: folding map; vol. 2: 3 folding plates (including one map); vol. 3: one folding map; vol. 6: folding map; and vol. 9: one plate (apparently lacking a folding map or plate between pp. 82-83). Contemporary French olive morocco gilt, vol. 9 bound in similarly gilt-decorated French russet morocco, edges gilt (spines lightly faded, minor wear). Provenance: anonymous armorial bookplate with ducal or prince's crest.
FIRST EDITION. The first volume, comprising two parts and complete in itself, was followed by a further eight volumes of Jesuit memoirs on the Levant which were published between 1715 and 1755. It contains the report on the Crimea and Greece and includes the rare map of the island of Santorini. “[Fleuriau d'Armenonville] né à Paris, le 20 novembre 1651, entra au noviciat, le 24 octobre 1670. Il professa la philosophie à Rouen; il fut ensuite, pendant plusieurs années, procureur des missions du Levant, et mourut à Paris, le 15 juin 1735” (de Backer).
Only the first 7 volumes were produced by Fleuriau, after which “les PP. Ingoult et Roger ont donné deux autres volumes, 1745 et 1755” (de Backer). Atabey 438; de Backer & Sommervogel III, col. 788-789; see Blackmer 610.
