PROPERTY FROM THE PROFESSOR FREDERICK SEGUIER DRAKE FAMILY COLLECTION (LOTS 204-211 INCLUSIVE)Professor Frederick Seguier Drake (1892-1976) was from a distinguished English family and born in Shandong, China. As an ordained minister when he was a young man, he devoted himself to missionary work and later became a scholar of Chinese and Divinity. Professor Drake travelled extensively within China as an archaeologist and was the Dean of the Faculty of Divinity at Qiliu (Cheeloo) University in Jinan, Shandong. After a brief return to England, Professor Drake took up the position of Chair of Chinese at the University of Hong Kong and led the archaeological excavation of the Lei Cheng Eastern Han Tomb in Hong Kong in the 1950s.

The Daoist deity is carved standing wearing long flowing robes and holding the peach of immortality in his hands. The carving is rendered as a branch of leafy bamboo on the background of a bamboo stalk.
