Lot Essay

Jo Grimond was a British politician and leader of the Liberal Party from 1956 to 1967. After the Second World War, the Liberal Party was on the brink of extinction. During his leadership, Grimond revived the party’s popularity, doubling their representation at Westminster and tripling their share of the vote. Grimond greatly admired the work of Heron and there is a portrait of the politician by the artist in the collection of the National Galleries of Scotland.
