Lot Essay

A Gothic chest of this form, but lacking the abundance of shells and strapwork, is in the Hispanic Society Collection (S58), illustrated and discussed in G.H. Burr, Hispanic Furniture, New York, 1964, pp. 122-123, pl. 119. Leather examples are also found, and often smaller in scale, see lot 25 and the example illustrated from the Collection of the Conde de las Almendas, Madrid, in A. Byne, Spanish Interiors & Furniture, New York, 1969, pl. 87.
