MAGGIO, Lucio (fl. 16th century). Del terremoto dialogo. Bologna: Alessandro Benacci, 1571.
4º (210 x 152mm). Woodcut ducal crown on title, large woodcut historiated initials, printer’s flowers. With final blank. (A few light waterstains.) Contemporary limp vellum (crinkled, spine repaired); modern half vellum box.
FIRST EDITION dedicated to Francesco Maria Feltrio della Rovere, prince of Urbino and duke of Sora, followed by a French edition in 1575 and a 1624 Bologna reprint. Maggio, a Bolognese nobleman, travelled to Ferrara to witness the damage to its great buildings. His dialogue with Fabio Albergati, Paolo Casali, and Giulio della Porta examines the causes and consequences of earthquakes, favouring an Aristotelian explanation in terms of natural causes rather than a supernatural one. Giacomo Antonio Buoni (1527-1587) also published a work on the Ferrara earthquake, with the same title and date, but of less rarity. BL/STC Italian Books p.403.
