2° (376 x 270mm). 42 full page engraved plates, including title-page and 'Avertissment' leaf by Gilles Demarteau. (Title slightly darkened, with small damp stain to lower margin, possible repair along right edge, slight spotting throughout, damp stains to lower right corner of 19 leaves, two small puncture holes through top margin of all leaves, slight scuff on plate 31, remnants of label to flyleaf). Contemporary quarter morocco, spine lettered in gilt (extremities lightly rubbed, light scratches to sides).

FIRST EDITION of this richly illustrated anatomical work containing 42 engravings printed in sanguine and engraved by Gilles Demarteau. Charles Monnet was one of the most famous illustrators of the 18th century and was the appointed painter of King Louis XVI. An illustrator and painter, his focus ranged from historical and mythological to portraits, landscapes, decorative designs and, as here, anatomy. Monnet is known as one of the best vignette artists of his time, and ended his career as a professor of drawing in Saint-Cyr. See Benezit for Monnet and Demarteau.
