MONTANARI, Geminiano (1633-1687). L' astrologia convinta di falso col mezzo di nuove esperienze, e ragioni fisico-astronomiche, o' sia La caccia del frugnuolo. Venice: Francesco Nicolini, 1685.
4º (238 x 175mm). Engraved author portrait, planetary table on I3v, woodcut ornaments. (Some spots, stains and soil marks.) Contemporary cartone alla rustica, spine titled in ink (covers rather soiled, tear across spine). Provenance: AP (initials at foot of title) – occasional alterations to text or pointing hand in margins, doodle in margin of portrait.
FIRST EDITION, the culmination of a long battle by Montanari against deeply cherished beliefs in astrology. His work ‘aroused great interest and brought about the banning of this pseudoscience from the universities.’ The compilation of an astrological almanac had been one of the duties of the sceptical Montanari in his position as astronomy teacher at the observatory of Panzano, near Modena. Although the Almanacco del Frugnuolo appeared regularly from 1669, it was an almost Swiftian invention by a non-believer; ‘its predictions, rather than being deduced from the appearance of the heavens, were picked at random in the presence of friends’ (DSB IX, p.485-86). Gamba 2019; Houzeau and Lancaster 5325; Riccardi I(ii), 175; Vinciana, Aut. Ital. del '600 1593.
