SACROBOSCO, Joannes de (1190-c.1250). Sfera. Translated and edited by Francesco Pifferi (b. 1548?). Siena: Silvestro Marchetti, 1604.
4° (215 x 155mm). Woodcut device on title, engraved portrait of Pifferi, woodcut diagrams. (Title lightly browned, lower corner of title with small repair, some, mainly marginal, waterstaining, corner of 2P4 repaired, light spotting.) Remboitage of old vellum, manuscript title on spine and fore-edges (a little soiled, new endpapers). Provenance: scored inscription (free endpaper).
First edition edited by Pifferi, a monk appointed at the Tuscan court for the mathematical education of the Grand Duke's son Cosimo, intended to give an entire overview of the mathematical sciences (see his dedicatory letter). 'Pifferi maintains the original four-chapter design of Sacrobosco's treatise, but the number of subjects is impressively greater than in the original treatise and very clearly resembles Ryff's tables of the subjects of the mathematical sciences' (Matteo Valleriani, The Structures of Practical Knowledge, p.429). Not in BL/STC.
