SCHOTT, Gaspar (1608-1666). Technica curiosa, sive mirabilia artis, libris XII comprehensa. [Nuremberg]: Jobus Hertz for Wolfgang Moritz Endter, 1687.
Small 4° (203 x 157mm). Half title, additional engraved title, printed title in red and black, full-page engraved portrait on verso, and 59 plates, some folding. (A few marginal repairs, occasionally affecting text, a few light spots.) Contemporary calf (front joints split but cords firmly holding, some repairs at head and foot of spine, rubbed). Provenance: ‘Bibl. Sem. Engol.’ (stamp on half-title and printed title).
Second edition, first published in 1664. The work includes 'much useful knowledge, descriptions of scientific instruments and mechanical technology. The first two sections of Technica curiosa are devoted to the aerostatic researches of Guericke and Boyle, and the treatise "Mirabilia chronometrica" gives the first description of a universal joint and a classification of gear teeth'. Cf. Berlin Katalog 1780; Duveen 537; Norman 1911; Waller 20243.
