With rebrowned twist sighted round barrel with octagonal breech-section, action signed 'THE EDINBURGH' on each side and 'MACNAUGHTON'S PATENT NO. 16/759' on the top of the breech, the action and trigger-guard under-lever each retaining much original case-hardened finish, and figured 14 in. stock including 5/8 in. age-hardened rubber recoil-pad

James MacNaughton patented two designs for breech actions on 12 July 1879 (Patent No. 2848), one for 'drop-down barrel' guns and another for 'sliding breech-block' guns. The present gun is use number 16 of this patent for the latter type of action.
