QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY
The cover is finely carved in low relief with a quadrilobed medallion constituted of archaistic scrolls within a border with geometric design above a petal-lappet band on the shoulder. The sides of the cover, middle section and lower section, are carved
with stylised ruyi scroll panels. All is raised on a foot of conforming outline.

Lot Essay

A two-tiered bamboo-veneered quadrilobed box of comparable size and very similar decoration, dated to mid-Qing dynasty, is in the collection of Palace Museum, Beijing, and illustrated in The Palace Museum Collection of Elite Carvings, Beijing, 2002, pp. 82-83, no. 51. Compare, also, another closely related pair in the shape of ruyi and dated to Qianlong, sold at Christie’s New York, 15 September 2009, lot 368.
