GIACOMO CONTERNO

The Giacomo Conterno estate is located just outside Monforte d'Alba, in Italy’s North-West Piemonte region. Giacomo Conterno produces arguably one of the world’s best expressions of the Nebbiolo grape, their Barolo Monfortino Riserva which is only produced in exceptional vintages. This wine is aged for at least 7 years in traditional large oak ‘botti’ (barrels) before bottling. The Monfortino is Giacomo Conterno’s signature wine and requires considerable bottle ageing to evolve, soften the tannins, and develop the liquorice, rose and tar aromas that characterise this outstanding wine.

The estate is currently run by Roberto Conterno who assumed control in 2003, when his father Giovanni Conterno passed away. Giovanni was the eldest son of Giacomo Conterno, who had founded the winery in conjunction with his father Giovanni (Roberto’s great-grandfather). Giovanni and Giacomo bottled their first Barolo Monfortino Riserva in 1920 and Giacomo ran the estate from 1934 until he passed control to his sons Giovanni and Aldo in 1961. In 1969 the two brothers parted company and Aldo set up his own estate called, Poderi Aldo Conterno.
