Lot Essay

1933 was a very busy and prolific year for John Skeaping, which led to his successful one man show at Arthur Tooth's Gallery in January - February 1934. Although the present work was not included in this exhibition (possibly having been sold by the time of the opening) it included other small-scale animal sculptures, including Dog, Pampas Cat and Hippopotamus. The style and quality of the carving in Pine marten is very similar to the sinuous curves of those works, and displays the continuing modernist focus in Skeaping's sculpture at this time.

We are very grateful to Nicholas Skeaping for his assistance in preparing this catalogue entry.
