Lot Essay

Craxton dedicated the present work to Gian Carlo Menotti, an Italian-American composer and librettist. Best known for his opera Amahl and the Night Visitors, Menotti was the partner of composer Samuel Barber and they were long-standing friends of Craxton. Craxton's father, Harold Craxton, was a pianist and composer, and Menotti was a guest at their home in 1948 when he came to perform in the UK.

We are very grateful to Ian Collins for preparing this catalogue entry.
