ZORGDRAGER, Cornelius Gijsbertsz (c. 1660-after 1730). Bloeyende opkomst der aloude en hedendaagsche Groenlandsche visschery. Amsterdam: Joannes Oosterwyck, 1720.

The cardinal primary source on the golden age of Dutch whaling, with striking illustrations of hunting in the Arctic ice flows. The Dutch discovered the rich whaling stocks of the Arctic in the late 16th cen. while searching for a Northeast passage, leading to their establishment of a near total monopoly on whaling into the 18th century. Zorgdrager, a whaling ship commander, published a report of his own research and experiences to combat the romantic myths and legends which were growing up around the profession. Herman Melville drew inspiration from this work for Moby Dick. Nissen ZBI 4509; Chavanne 2110; Sabin 106374 (incorrect plate count).

Quarto (203 x 156mm). Engraved frontispiece; title in black and red; 7 engraved plates, one of which folding; and 6 folding maps (lacking 2T4 as usual [binder’s instruction?], pl. after p. 162 has repair to verso). Contemporary vellum. Provenance: Heritage Book Shop.
