The first edition in English of "one of the fundamental early books on the Aleutian Islands and particularly Unalaska" (Lada-Mocarski). Sarychev was deputy to Captain Joseph Billings, the leader of the Russian expedition of 1785 to 1793, sent by Empress Catherine II to explore the Arctic and North Pacific Oceans. Sarychev's account was first published in Russian in 1802 as Puteshestvie Flota Kapitana Sarycheva (see lot 145 for a full description). Arctic Bib. 37222; Hill 1527; Howes S-115; cf. Two volumes, octavo (206 x 130mm). 5 engraved plates, 3 of which are folding and the other 2 handcolored (light spotting to folding plates). The pagination follows Sabin, Howes calls for an additional leaf at the end of vol 2 and Arctic Bib. for another page at end of vol 1. Modern half calf over marbled boards, spines gilt-lettered.
