A rare complete copy of the first edition, in a contemporary binding for a Russian Imperial Guard regiment. RBH records no other complete copy having been offered at auction. This work includes a valuable map of the Bering Strait and the Arctic Sea – including North America – which is usually lacking from most copies. The Chukchi controlled the early trade with the Alaskan peoples across the Bering Strait; they defended their monopoly resolutely and because of this were considered by early Russian explorers to be the fiercest of the East Siberian peoples. For decades the Chukchi successfully resisted Russian attempts to impose a tribute, and earned an autonomous status within the Russian Federation that has lasted to this day. Sarychev based this work on his review of expedition journals and notes by Billings and others, including Captain Hall's Pacific voyage on the Black Eagle. The text also includes an extensive lexicon for twelve dialects and languages of Siberia and the Aleutian Islands. Arctic Bib. 37224; Howes S-116; Lada-Mocarski 67; Obol'ianinov 2405; Sabin 77124; Tourville 3970; Wickersham 6133.

Quarto (271 x 215mm). Three folding maps printed on heavy paper, three folding engraved plates by and after Kozma Cheski (small marginal repairs in the plates; faint dampstain in the bottom margin of the last few gatherings; without initial blank or blank leaf 17.2, as issued). Contemporary Russian red half morocco, flat spine gilt in compartments, edges sprinkled blue (extremities rubbed). Provenance: Library of the Life-Guards 2nd Artillery Brigade (binding, bookplate) – Russian shelf marks in indigo pencil on the title – William Reese Co.
