LORING, Charles G. (1794-1867). Memoir of the Hon. William Sturgis. Boston: Press of John Wilson and Son, 1864.

The first edition of the biography of William Sturgis, from the library of Robert Bennet Forbes. Sturgis served in the Pacific Northwest as a young man and used his experiences to become a successful fur trader. He later settled in the Boston area to write on the history of Russian-US boundary negotiations, and where he was, perhaps, a member of Forbes’s circle of international merchants and ship owners. Howes L-471; Lada-Mocarski 155; Sabin 42076; Tourville 2797.

Octavo (232 x 150mm). Original brown pebbled cloth, gilt edges (spine lightly sunned). Provenance: Clarke & Carruth Booksellers & Stationers, Boston (label) – R. B. Forbes (1804-1889, a prominent Boston merchant and ship owner who played a part in the Opium War, provided aid during the Irish Famine, and eventually became American vice consul at Canton; his home is now a museum; partially erased but legible pencil inscription from K. I. Bigelow) – Boston Book Co.
