LOMONOSOV, Mikhail Vasil’evich (1711-1765) – Proekt Lomonosova i ekspeditsiia Chichagova. [Lomonosov’s Project and Chichagov’s Expedition.] St. Petersburg: at the Naval Press by the Hydrographic Department, 1854.
Lomonosov’s important memorandum on the Northeast Passage, in which he tied Russia's future glory to the opening of new naval trade routes, and asserted the feasibility of sailing through the Arctic into the Pacific Ocean. The second (enlarged) edition. Lomonosov succeeded in persuading the Admiralty College to launch two voyages under the command of Vasilii Chichagov in 1765 and 1766. Both attempts were halted by pack ice. Lomonosov’s manuscript and the associated expedition documents in this work were only discovered in the 1840s, and first published in 1847. Cf. Lada-Mocarski 128 (for the first edition); Russia Engages the World, p.99. Two parts in one volume. 12° (200 x 113mm, with deckle edges). (Light scattered spotting; small dampstain in the margin of some leaves.) Original yellow wrappers, the side printed in black (light wear at the extremities, small splits at the spine).
