The first edition of William Chimmo’s account of his time as a midshipman on Pacific surveying missions. On his third voyage, the author joined the HMS Herald at Guayaquil on her search for Franklin. Chimmo was an artist in his own right, and the lithographs are after his own drawings—excepting perhaps two plates borrowed from Seemann’s German publication on the voyage of the Herald (see lot 287). Forbes 2359; Lada-Mocarski 147.

Octavo (210 x 130mm). 14 lithographed plates, all but 2 tinted and some color (some occasional spotting). Original blue blind-stamped cloth, gilt-lettered on front cover and spine (wear to extremities, dampstain to upper cover, text block cracked). Provenance: Pease family (armorial bookplate) – Charles L. Machen (c. 1891; inscription) – G. Holland Schuz (inscription) – Bonhams, 27 March 2012, lot 16.
