NANSEN, Fridtjof (1861-1930). The First Crossing of Greenland. London: Longmans, Green and Co., 1890.

An attractive copy of the first English edition of Nansen’s expedition across the Greenland icecap, from the library of John Levinson, former president of the Explorer’s Club. Nansen designed much of his equipment from scratch in order to travel as light as possible, forming a party of only six people, including, on the advice of Nordenskiöld, two Sami men. Despite public ridicule over his plans, the expedition was a great success. Arctic Bib. 11985.

Two volumes, octavo (220 x 143mm). 12 plates, 5 folding maps, in-text illustrations. Publisher’s original decorated cloth. Provenance: Dr. John M. Levinson (president of the Explorers Club, New York; bookplate) – George T. Cushing (signature) – Swann Galleries, sale 211, lot 58.
