NANSEN, Fridtjof (1861-1930). Paa ski over Grønland: en Skildring af Den norske Grønlands-Ekspedition 1888-89. Kristiania: H. Aschehoug & Co., 1890.
The first Norwegian edition of Nansen’s Greenland expedition, with charming pictorial binding. Despite facing public opposition to his plans to cross the Greenland icecap with a small party and light equipment, Nansen was enormously successful and returned to much acclaim. Unlike previous attempts, he crossed East to West, heading toward the settlements on Greenland's West coast. Arctic Bib. 12010.
Octavo (220 x 151mm). Portrait frontispiece, 20 plates, 5 folding maps, numerous in-text illustrations (spotting). Publisher’s original decorated brown cloth, with elaborate tableau of Nansen in action on upper board. Provenance: Peter Grosell.
