COLLECTION OF MR DU GARDIN (LOT 119-124)Mr du Gardin worked in the wine and cosmetic business in China in the 1940s and was captivated by the Chinese art and culture. During his stay in China, he would attend salons hosted by the French compatriots and acquired many Chinese paintings by artists such as Huang Binhong (1864-1955), Qi Baishi (1863-1957), Fu Baoshi (1904-1965) or Lin Fengmian (1900-1991). In each of the paintings, he would write on the mounting or the back to record the provenance.

Lot Essay

The collector wrote on the back of his painting that he met Mr Chang Tse-Fu in Nan Tong on Feburary 1937, who offered this present painting to him a few years later (originally offered by the artist Huang Binhong himself).
