Lot Essay

Mr du Gardin wrote on the back of the painting to immortalize the day when he met Qi Baishi at his studio. According to his notes, Qi Baishi explained to him that the red colour he used was a foreign and expensive pigment and he purposely painted two butterflies above the red flowers to add more value to the painting. The collector was very pleased and purchased this present painting for 30 yuans.
