A CARVED RED LACQUER SQUARE TRAY
MING DYNASTY, LATE 15TH-16TH CENTURY
The square tray with flaring sides is carved in the center with an aged scholar wearing voluminous robes seated on a river bank under a willow tree, accompanied by a boy attendant making herbal medicine, while another boy catches fish, and a crane with outspread wings flies above. The sides are carved with peony, chrysanthemum and pomegranate sprays. The base is lacquered black.
