LIU KUO -SUNG (LIU GUOSONG, B. 1932)
FROM THE COLLECTION OF REX BRANDT (1914-2000)Born in 1914, Rex Brandt was an American watercolour artist who belonged to the California Scene Painting movement. He studied at the University of California, Berkeley and Stanford University, and became acquainted with Liu Kuo-sung when he stayed in the U.S. on a two year international travel grant in 1966. Brandt studied Chinese painting, and was inspired by the Northern Song dynasty artist Guo Xi (c. 1020-1090), as well as Taoist principles of painting. The same year Liu Kuo-sung held his first solo exhibition in the US at the Laguna Art Museum in California, showcasing 28 works. Cloud and Mist was acquired from this exhibition, and has remained in Brandt’s family collection since.
