Petrus 1966
Pomerol, cru exceptionnel
Slightly corroded capsule. Lightly bin-soiled and slightly damaged label. Level: upper-shoulder
Tasting note: Well, I suppose this is the style of wine they all try to imitate. But I must admit, it was enormously impressive, from a ‘hefty’ cask sample in 1967, followed by some impressive tastings in the 1980’s. Deep, the wine’s extract almost visible it is so thick looking. And equally rich nose, almost malty yet developing a lovely fragrance. Sweet, full-bodied, yet tannic. Made as if the grapes had not been pressed but allowed to drip their sugar-laden juice. Last tasted April 1990 ***** M.B.
1966 Vintage Report: One of my favourite vintages which I have always described as a ‘lean, long-distance runner’. Growing conditions: early flowering, cool and fairly dry summer but a very hot, sunny, ripening September, with the harvest stating in good conditions on 6 October. M.B.
