MAYAN POLYCHROME VESSEL

The multi-figured scene depicting a ‘dance’ in which a female figure in a patterned, wraparound garment impersonates the Moon Goddess, Ixchel, emanating a speech scroll, her shoulders and face painted in decorative deep orange presenting a rabbit in her extended arms to a male figure in a sashed loincloth and sweeping headdress, a similar rabbit resting at her feet, the scene repeated with the female holding a jar and a diminutive black jaguar on a lead and confronting a male figure in an animated pose, followed by an attendant holding a frog upside down, a band of glyphs encircling the top with the Primary Standard Sequence with the addition of glyphs alluding to ‘his drinking vessel for maize (tree) cacao’.

Vase dont la bordure est encadrée d’un bandeau de glyphes suggérant « un récipient pour le maïs (arbre) cacao » et décoré d’une scène où l’on retrouve plusieurs personnages qui exécutent une danse au sein de laquelle une représentation féminine vêtue d’un vêtement en portefeuille décoré de motifs incarne la Déesse de la Lune, Ixchel, aux épaules et au visage peints en orange vif, avec la représentation d’un lapin, en train de parler et tendant ses bras vers un personnage masculin avec un lapin identique au précédent à ses pieds et vêtu d’un pagne croisé et d’une coiffure imposante, une autre scène se déroulant avec un personnage féminin portant une jarre et tenant en laisse un petit jaguar noir, placée en face d’un personnage masculin en train de se mouvoir et suivie de dos par un domestique qui tient une grenouille.
