SAVONAROLA, Girolamo (1452-1498). Dell'amore di Gesu. Florence: Antonio di Bartolommeo Miscomini, 26 June 1492.

Rare edition of a devotional tract by the Florentine firebrand Girolamo Savonarola. Savonarola, architect of the now archetypal “Bonfire of the Vanities,” was an apocalyptic preacher whose fervent reformist preaching captured the hearts of not just the common people but even men like Lorenzo de Medici and Pico della Mirandola. Evenually he was condemned and executed as a heretic by Pope Alexander VI. ISTC records only one other copy of this edition in the United States. HC 14350; BMC VI 641; BSB-Ink S-150; CIBN S-75; IGI 8782; Audin 40; Kristeller 374f; Goff S-167; ISTC is00167000. See also Dick Higgins, Pattern Poetry: Guide to an Unknown Literature (1987), p.187.

Chancery quarto (193 x 121mm). 28 leaves. Full-page woodcut of the crucifixion; woodcut printer’s device on final leaf (some very light spotting; first leaf slightly chipped). Modern red morocco.
