Henriques & Henriques, Verdelho Reserva R.R. Ribeiro Real
Madeira
Stopper cork. Golden label. Level: into-neck
This Verdelho comes from vineyards located in Ribeiro Real, Estreito de Camara de Lobos.
These vineyards belonged to João Joaquim Henriques, the last of the Henriques who passed away in 1968,
First tasted from a previously opened bottle at the H&H lodge.
Tasting note: Sweet punkins nose, rich intense nose. Off dry lovely acidity, vibrant fresh, great soft mid palet of citrus fruit and sweet apples. Fine finish of fresh citric acidity. Great length.
A year later a bottle from my own cellar. Clear orange mahonia color. Deep rich expressive nose of leather, classic furniture wax in sweet concentrated complex aromas. Punchy. Intense and highly complex from an extensive cask aging. Vintage not indicated but clearly from the mid to late 19th century. Fresh in high quality Verdelho style.
Medium dry taste of fudge, sweet pumpkins, mineral, firestone tones, intense and lingering, concentrated and confirming my initial feeling that this wine has been aged in canteiro for more then 50 years. On the finish complex red grapefruit aroma's, juicy acidity and a slight fine bitter tone prevails. An amazing wine of great complexity. An essence of Verdelho.
