BENJAMIN BRITTEN (1913-1976)
A collection of 10 autograph letters, signed, and 4 typed letters, signed, the majority from 4 Crabbe Street, Aldeburgh, 1948-1973, all to James Lawrie the Deputy Chairman of the English Opera Group for which Britten was one of three artistic directors. The first 3-page autograph letter, signed, dated December 15th 1948, states: "I want very much to dedicate my version of the Beggars' Opera to you ... I do very much hope that you will accept this dedication, which comes as a sign of gratitude from us all for the immense amount of hard work, time and patience that you have spent on the E.O.G., and above all for the faith which you have kept in us." The rest of the correspondence deals with a whole range of issues dealt with by the English opera including financial and other problems as day to day issues.
