Lot Essay

Suzanna Caviglia-Brunel compares the present red chalk drawing with a black chalk of similar subject also from collection of the Chevalier de Damery, monogrammed 'C.N.' and of equal size (op.cit., no. D. 49, ill.). The present drawing can be dated to Natoire's early career by comparaison with this sheet, which Caviglia-Brunel dates to 1723-1728.
