GOVERT FLINCK, MINERVA, BLACK, WHITE AND RED CHALK ON BLUE PAPER, COUNTER-PROOF, INSCRIBED
This drawing is in fact a counterproof after a lost drawing by Flinck, which he later heightened with white and signed. Other examples of this practice exist, including an unsigned original and signed counterproof of it at the Albertina (inv. 10211, 26220; see W. Sumowski, Drawings of the Rembrandt School, New York, 1981, no. 885, ill.). Recently rediscovered, the drawing does not seem to be related to any painting by Flinck, and was conceivably made in the context of joint drawing sessions with Jacob Backer, as suggested by Annemarie Stefes (see Literature). Indeed, a drawing of the same subject and in the same technique by Backer has recently come to light at the Kunsthalle, Bremen (inv. 73 Z; see Stefes, op. cit., passim, fig. 1).

Ce dessin est une contre-épreuve d'après un dessin perdu de Flinck, qu'il a ensuite rehaussé de blanc et signé. Il existe d'autres exemples de cette pratique, notamment un original non signé et une contre-épreuve signée à l'Albertina (inv. 10211, 26220 ; voir W. Sumowski, Drawings of the Rembrandt School, New York, 1981, n° 885, ill.). Récemment redécouvert, ce dessin ne semble pas lié à un tableau et pourrait avoir été réalisé dans le cadre de séances de dessin communes avec Jacob Backer, comme le suggère Annemarie Stefes (voir bibliographie). En effet, un dessin du même sujet et de la même technique par Backer a récemment été découvert à la Kunsthalle de Brême (inv. 73 Z ; voir Stefes, op. cit., passim, fig. 1).
