BRORA
Brora was initially named ‘Clynelish’ when the Duke of Sutherland founded the distillery in 1819. In 1967, Distillery Company Ltd (later Diageo), bought the distillery and renamed it as Brora. Brora was much favoured by blenders and formed the backbone of Johnnie Walker. Their heavily peated style, produced in the late 1960s, was in high demand, due to the temporary closure of Caol Ila. Brora was closed in 1983 and independent bottlers releases, became treasured bottles. In 1995, United Distillers started releasing different age expressions of Brora in their Rare Malts Selection. The 40 Year Old 1972 release, with a retail price of £7,000, at that time was the most expensive one ever released by the company. The distillery has recently announced that it will reopen after 38 years.
This 20 Year Old release from 1975, bottled at 59.10%, was twice awarded Silver in the International Wine and Spirit Competition. A well-balanced peaty whisky with saline lift and fruity concentration.
