PANTHEUS, Johannes Antonius (d.1535)
Ars et Theoria transmutationis metallicae cum Voarchadumia, proportionibus, numeris, Voarchadumia contra alchimiam. Ars distincta ab archimia, & sophia: cum additionibus, proportionibus. Paris: V. Gaultherot, 1550.
Two finely printed and illustrated alchemical and metallurgical works by Pantheus an Italian priest and alchemist. 'Pantheus wrote against spurious alchemy and he deals partly with the assay of gold, which is illustrated with drawings of rolling mills, furnaces of various sorts with the accompanying apparatus and a balance of weights, and partly with the chemical preparation of various substances which were made at Venice in his time and were used in the arts. He describes, for example, the manufacture of white lead and of an alloy for mirrors... Pantheus was a priest at Venice, but seems nevertheless to have been devoted to chemical research’ (Ferguson). Caillet 8274; Duveen p. 450; Ferchl p. 393; Ferguson 2:166-7; Thorndike 5:537-9; Adams P-184.

2 works in one volume, octavo (165 x 105mm). Woodcut world map on first title, woodcut criblé initials, 14 woodcuts illustrations, mostly full-page, Hebrew and angelic-Enochian alphabets (light dampstaining in first work, wormtracks in upper margins of second, expertly restored). Early limp vellum (recased, remains of ties, covers a little soiled). Provenance: armorial blindstamp on margin of D7 – J. A. Freilich (sale, Sotheby's NY, 10-11 January 2001, lot 422; bookplate).
