The Norman copy of the first edition, very rare. ‘Most of Paracelsus’s innovations in chemical therapeutics are contained in the Septem libri de gradibus. Paracelsus rebelled against ancient humoral pathology, which held that all disease resulted from an imbalance of bodily humors, by stating that each disease was a specific entity caused by an agent outside the body’ (Norman). Cf. Garrison-Morton 1818; NLM/Durling 3480; Pagel, Paracelsus pp. 134-146; Sudhoff 98; Wellcome 4765; Norman 1636.
Octavo (155 x 102mm). Woodcut initials (some minor marginal dampstaining). Modern marbled boards (a little rubbed). Provenance: Wellcome Library (withdrawn stamp on title verso) – (armorial blindstamp on title) – H.F. Norman (sale Christie’s NY, 18 March 1998, lot 148; bookplate).
