First edition autobiography of a pioneering nineteenth-century clown, edited by "Boz." The first issue, bound in pink cloth, without the “grotesque” border on the final plate and with the inserted “List of Embellishments” incorrectly listing the sixth plate at page 238. Two volumes, octavo. Half-titles, 36 pp. publisher’s ads at the end of vol. 2. Engraved portrait frontispiece of Grimaldi by W. Greatbach and 12 etched plates by George Cruikshank (some toning). Original pink embossed cloth and spines gilt by Rackerman, yellow coated endpapers (small stains to back cover of vol. 2, minor restoration to spine). Provenance: C.W. McAlpin (bookplate).
